Non-Toxic Cosmetics

Coastal Classics Loose Powder (free gift with purchase)

Ever since I was mistakenly diagnosed with cancer 5 yrs ago, I have been very focused on health. It started with taking charge of my health care, then extended to learning more about nutrition and my body, and then the toxicity of our environment -- that is the products we use, air we breathe, water we drink, the thinking patterns and emotions we expose ourselves to, etc. I sometimes wonder how I was even able to work full-time with all the reading and effort I put into taking care of myself and my family!

Several months ago, after discovering the Cosmetic Database, I threw out almost all my cosmetics. I mean, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, make-up, lotions. . ..a LOT of stuff. It was hard but seriously -- almost all of the stuff we use on a daily basis is really bad for you! It's no wonder that nearly everyone gets cancer if they live long enough. They are also the cause of so many sensitivities/allergies, asthma.

This post is meant to focus on make-up! At first I tried the brand that the Cosmetic Database marks as being the least toxic of all: Coastal Classic Creations. I had a bit of trouble with my order, due to shipping calculation costs and me being in Canada, but eventually that got sorted out.

My first impression was OMG these containers are TINY! The photos on the site are much larger than the cosmetics are in real life. They really are super-small, like an inch or less in diameter. The weights are listed right there but the numbers didn't mean anything to me. This is not a big deal -- just a reaction I had as I am used to the larger-sized toxic stuff.

Also, I had to go out and spend an extra $30 on brushes and those wedge-applicators on top of the cost of the order. I am very used to drugstore cosmetics that come with brushes. I paid about $75, with the currency exchange (CDN to USD) for two eye shadows (one doubles as a powder-based eyeliner), a blush, a loose powder (plus I got one free with purchase as pictured above) and this orange waxy stuff (also free) that they say you should put on under the loose powder for full coverage. Fairly priced.

But alas, they didn't work very well for me :( If you are the sort of person who hardly ever wears make-up then they might be right for you, but I need serious coverage! I have acne, acne scars and undereye circles that need covering up. I followed the site's advice for using their foundation, which is actually a loose powder, and it seemed as if I was wearing absolutely nothing at all. No matter how much I brushed on, even with their orange waxy stuff beneath it. It just wasn't heavy enough to cover my dark spots. To this day I apply it over my foundation though, it works great as a loose powder.

The problem with the eye shadows and blush were that they were very, very saturated with colour. I put as little as I could on my brushes, yet they were so concentrated. Well, with the grey eyeshadow I ordered, it was very opaque. Some people probably prefer that. The black eye shadow, which I used as an eyeliner with a very tiny brush, was better. It is very rich but the problem is the granules kept getting into my eyes! With practise I think I could do a better job, but it was just more trouble than it was worth for me. I may try it again when I have some time. Plus, similiar to pencil eyeliners, it didn't set for very long and soon enough smudged. I usually prefer liquid eyeliner for that reason. So for those that prefer liquid over pencil, this stuff may not be right for you. Otherwise, it is generally great value for the price.

The blush I couldn't get to work at all. I looked like a clown cause the colour was so bright and intense! Maybe I could have diluted it with some of the loose powder? I would have needed several containers of that loose powder to last me a month, then. In a sense it has great value cause it's so concentrated. I guess I am just very used to mainstream cosmetics and how they work.

Going non-toxic presents a learning curve. I often compare it to cleaning a bath tub: you could use baking soda to scrub away, but it will require more work than a bleach-based abrasive. Each person has to figure out if it's worth it to them.

The next least toxic make-up from a brand I had heard of and could buy locally was Almay. There were a few other brands that were almost completely non-toxic, but I didn't want to pay shipping and risk spending more money for something I'd have to throw out. Almay is a popular brand so I thought what the hell. I bought their eyeliner and mascara. The eyeliner is great! I'm using it to this day, it is like a cream-stick. The mascara works. . .but it is far from being as good as others, like Revlon or L'Oreal (who test on animals and produce quite toxic make-up, btw.)

I recently ventured into MAC. Now MAC cosmetics on the whole, like Almay, are not very toxic compared to most of the popular brands. On a scale of 0 to 10, 0 being not toxic at all (Coastal Classic Creations), MAC tends to be around 4 or 5 with some 7s. (My old Revlon foundation was a 9!!!) It works extremely well, great coverage, great colours, applies like a dream. I love it. They do cost more though, around $20 per product, or in the case of foundation, $31. I think they're worth it though. I'd rather have a bit healthier product that works well than nothing.

Being a mother has aged me tremendously. The continual lack of sleep, the hormonal ups and downs really wreak havoc on my skin. I've focused on make-up to help boost my self-esteem. I used to think I was so beautiful (just being truthful!) but over the last several months had become quite ugly to myself. So make-up helps, A LOT! :) On the days I feel and look awesome, I wear none. On the days I need some help, I put it on and feel awesome again! :) Besides, I do think most people look a bit better with make-up, it is part of basic grooming. That is just the way I roll, though. Each to their own.

I use Everyday Minerals, which has a rating range of 0-3... not too shabby. The coverage does tend to be a bit sheer. However, you can order a free sample pack (I think it's 3 foundation samples, 1 blush, 1 concealer and maybe another sample) for just the cost of shipping (which I think is about $4). Might be worth it if you want to try another cosmetic without spending a bunch of $$$.

I know what you mean about motherhood aging you. You've probably seen on my blog how I talk about fashion and stuff. I just feel like a dumpy frump lately... I know it's the "mommy" tag that's affecting me psychologically, you know? It's funny... because I never took the time to do my hair or makeup or anything before I had a baby. And now that I have one, I spend more time on that stuff than ever before.

I like MAC lip colour products. It just stays on better. I don't usually wear much make up these days (no time to put any on). I like Almay products for blush and foundation -- none of it makes me break out.

I hate anything L'Oreal. I got this wicked sty in my eye one time from one of their lash-thickening mascaras -- it actually clogged my pores and gave me this big zit in my eyelid. Was that ever painful! Their lipsticks are greasy (and are gone in 5 minutes) and their foundations all make me break out. Their blushes make me break out, too. Even putting aside the toxicity issue, I'll never buy anything L'Oreal again. It's all garbage.

Honestly, Petals, I saw your photos from previous posts and I think you look awesome! It's the sleep deprivation that's making you feel like you're not looking so good. I find the mind plays tricks and distorts how you see things (especially how you see yourself) when you haven't had enough sleep. Just get some sleep and you'll be feeling like yourself again and you won't even need the make-up.

I'm going to go take my own advice now and hit the hay. The last few nights have been brutal with kids and flu season.

Bitsofpieces: Thanks for the tip! I will look into that company.

I guess I've always been into make-up and hair. ..oh you should have seen me as a teenager! lol! I was totally and completely made-up, very industrial punk. Throughout my 20s I just did the business casual look and have found I completely have had to re-define myself as a mother. It IS an adjustment, that's for sure. I never wore jeans in my life till now! The same hairstyles and make-up I wore as a designer aren't very practical for me, and physically I have changed massively. I had to get an entirely new wardrobe as none of my old clothes fit at all (I am average sized now whereas I used to be a skeleton.) I far prefer where I'm at now though. I was really, really ready to become a mother. I think we all eventually get used to it though, make the transition. It definitely isn't easy though.

Allison: I haven't tried MAC lip colours or Almay foundations/blush. but when I need that stuff again I will try out those, thank you!

Awful about the L'Oreal experiences, ugh. You'd think if they tested on animals that they'd not be that toxic. . .it's as if their products weren't tested at all. Perhaps the company is mostly predicated on reputation.

Thank you for the compliment :) Mind you, I am wearing sunglasses to hide the caverns under my eyes! I bet sleep dep. is a factor in how I feel about myself, though. Rarely do I get little sleep and wake up thinking, "damn I look hot!" lol

Ah, sleep, the secret elixer of mommies everywhere.

All the best!

Have you ever seen one of those loofah disks for the face? I just "discovered" them when I was at Loblaws this past winter (I tried it because it was 99 cents) and they work quite well as a pick-me-upper for tired looking skin. It exfoliates and gets circulation going in your face.

I like how afterwards, my skin looks like I just walked out of a spa.

"Signature Minerals" sells good stuff for covering up acne, scars, etc, they have real user photos on their websites showing it, I found them through a user comment on a review in the Cosmetic Safety Database, thank God for that database, I have been changing my products, too.

Thank you for sharing. I want to share with you two thoughts. First, the overall score on the cosmetics database is just the beginning of the story. You need to click on the product and see the txicity score of all the ingredients. There are some reallly nasty ingredeints in youyr 5-7 products. There are some in products that are 0-3's as well. The good news is that the database gives you all the information you neeed to make informed decisions.

Ava Anderson Non Toxic is launching Dec 1 - the first complete line of skincare and cosmetics in the country with all "0's" - not just the overall score, but ALL INGREDIENTS are zero's on the cosmetics database.

Ave is 15! Hope you will take alook and try her products.

Have a heatlhy and happy day.

Hello!
I am very happy to have found your blog. I am a fellow Canadian mother, very concerned about chemicals in cosmetics and food, especially in everything I use for young daughter and baby. I have also placed an order with Coastal Classic, we will see if I have better luck using the products. I hope it works out, because I am very impressed with the ingredients, I should say the FEW ingredients. The blush, for example, is made of organic crushed rose petals, that's it, that's all! Some of the other product lines mentionned in this blog have lots of ingredients that are toxic. I have really started reading ingredients now, on everything. Not sure if Mac lists their ingredients, I love their products, but I'm pretty sute they use Mica and other toxins. Being Canadian, I was thrilled to find this online cosmetic company called Sappho Cosmetics - Their website says: A new, green, eco conscious, organic based makeup line. Free of synthetic chemicals,... But their eyeshadow, for example, contains Mica, titanium dioxide, ferric ferrocyanide,... I was not very happy about this. What's really bothering me is the shampoos and soaps I was using on the kids. I was bying Avalon organics and the like, better than most products I guess, but still contains chemicals I prefer not to use now. The diaper wipes are a disaster!!! I cannot believe they make this stuff for babies! I would suggest everyone READ THE INGREDIENTS!!! I'm sure everyone is aware of this website http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ , but there are several websites listing chemicals and toxins to avoid in your products, such as ``PEG`` and ``eth``, sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate and bromo nitropropane in diaper wipes, etc. (See ewg.org) for one. Please let me know if anyone finds baby safe products, and cosmetics, especially in Canada! Greetings to all Moms!
