Does anyone know how to prevent shoes from getting scuff marks? I can't find the answer via google at all.
Yesterday my little girl was running around for about 10 mins in a brand new pair of See Kai Run shoes. Within a few minutes she had completely scuffed the front of both of them -- not marked, but actually scuffed the leather so that it was peeling up! She didn't trip or anything like that. Was running around on the grass and then went up a flight of concrete steps (I think this is what did the shoes in.)
I know there is no way to really fix them now, so want to prevent this from happening with other new shoes. It really sucked as this was the first time she ever wore those shoes and I was hoping they'd last till fall (along with another couple pairs of new shoes.) Now they look horrible :( There goes $40+ down the drain :(
As an experiment I put a layer of mink oil on another pair of new shoes. I'll let you all know if that worked out or not. If anyone knows a definite way to prevent scuff marks, it'd be really cool if you'd share.
Thank you!

I love See Kai Run shoes - so flexible and good for baby feet - but they do scuff badly. I have found no solution beyond accepting the scuffs; they look bad but they don't seem to weaken the shoe. (After four months my boy's VERY scuffed SKR sandals are holding steady despite much scraping through playgrounds.)
I HAVE taken a magic marker (brown, to match the sandals) to the scuff marks, to disguise them a bit. I think scuffs are the price you pay for such nice, flexible leather.
I love the designs of their shoes. I have only just bought two pairs from them so have almost no experience with them outside of what I posted.
They're a great transition from Robeez, which my little girl is still wearing but won't be able to for very long as they don't sell many shoes in her size. She's been wearing their treadz line for several months now as she was such an early walker (from 9.5 mos.) They scuff as well but it takes quite a while longer, in my experience.
No matter what she NEEDS flexible soles, I will not put shoes on her that don't have very flexible soles -- glad to hear you make the same choice for your son.
I don't know how well marker would do to cover up the scuff marks on pink shoes :( I may put those shoes on her if she's just going to run around the park...not sure yet. I suppose scuffed shoes are part of a child's aesthetic :) Goes with the territory.
In any case, I hope the next pair don't get marred so quickly. I was thinking of spraying the toes lightly with a low odour varnish, the sort that you use to seal paintings.
I've been thinking about this. I don't have any suggestions for preventing scuffs.
But, have you ever tried a pair of Jumping Jacks shoes? OMG, they are SO awesome. I've never seen them around until I picked up a pair used at the TPoMBA (Toronto Parents of Multiple Births Association) spring sale for A BUCK! Jumping Jacks ROCK! They don't scuff at all because they're made of a scuff-resistant material.
What's great about them is that there's this thick sole that's a good shock absorber. And the material used to make the shoe isn't that cheapie shit. It's a good solid shoe. The pair I bought at the sale were obviously loved but not scuffed and could still last another 3 or 4 children after Mara's done with them. A bit of black shoe polish restored the colour nicely.
I'm now looking at a pair of their Sunshines or the Petals. God, what a beautiful pair of children's shoes but I'm hesitating a bit because of the price. With taxes and shipping, it comes up to ~$80 for a pair. Ouch! But I love the soles on them. Freaking gorgeous pair of shoes. Mara's played at the playground with the black Jumping Jacks that we'd gotten at the sale in the spring, gotten into all kinds of trouble and they really don't scuff at all. But $80? I'll have to really think about that and I'll probably end up never getting them. I might be more inclined to pick them up new if her feet didn't grow so quickly but I think she'd only get a few months out of them. Bummer.
Well, there's my usual blah blah blah blah....
Oh they have really nice shoes. I'd never even heard of that company. But yeah, the prices are a bit too high for us too. I already thought spending close to $50 for one pair was crazy, cause as you say they last a couple months and that's it. Maybe I'll keep an eye out for a sale, though V actually doesn't need any new shoes for the next two seasons (hopefully. . I bought up a bunch at her current size, one size up, and 2 sizes up at some sales recently at Robeez and See Kai Run.)
